“Skeletal” Piano & Bench

Fall 2019 • UNCSA’s Spring Awakening

This skeletal fabrication of gothic styled upright piano, and matching bench, was designed by Kevin McBee and fabricated by myself as lead artisan. Due to the natural of the staging and the thin but elegant design of the piano, along with all the rest of the custom furniture, soft maple was chosen due to its strength, grain structure, and color when stained. By designer request, and due to the fact that all the furniture was to be stained, all joinery and visible mechanical fasteners needed to be period accurate. Due to these factors, the piano consists of 44 unique mortise and tenons and no screw fasteners (except for the attachment of the casters). To replicate the designers vision for the piano too as close as drafted, 10’ of custom cut soft maple crown molding was made originally fabricated.
